The village of Nazeing, a parish in Essex some 4 miles north of Waltham Abbey, has a population of almost 4000 but back in the middle of the 19th century it was much smaller, yet still held its own race meeting on Tuesday 7th August 1855 to celebrate the on-going success in the Crimean War. The course, a famous one between Broxbourne and Rye House Stations, is said to have first been used for racing horses during the reign of King Charles I. The meeting opened with the Sebastopol Plate over three quarters of a mile which was won, appropriately enough, by Battle. The Hurdle race which followed saw Black Swan beat Fenman. The principal race was a Silver Cup given in honour of the First Class Yeomanry and was won by Miss Fanny. Races of minor note had taken place regularly before this celebratory meeting, and continued after this meeting. |
